Ouwerkerk: jouwerkerk@mwdoc.com; (714) 593-5029 (office) or (949) 274-6492 (cell) ORANGE COUNTY WATER PROVIDERS CALL FOR ENHANCED WATER USE EFFICIENCY EFFORTS FOLLOWING GOVERNOR BROWN’S DROUGHT DECLARATION Fountain Valley, CA (January 17, 2014) – Today, Governor Brown officially declared a drought emergency in the state of California amidst declining reservoir levels and historically low amounts of rainfall. Orange County water providers are concerned about the continuing dry conditions throughout the State and are closely monitoring water supplies, but at this time local residents and businesses face no immediate danger of supply interruptions. However, this is a serious situation statewide, and we ask that everyone assess their current water usage and make simple changes to ensure our water supplies are being used as efficiently as possible. “While we can’t predict how much rain Mother Nature will bring us this year, Orange County water providers have invested heavily in water reliability projects to prepare for a situation like this,” remarked Joan Finnegan, MWDOC Board President. “Continuing to invest in key water reliability projects like the water conveyance facilities proposed in the Bay Delta Conservation Plan as well as local projects will ensure our water supplies remain reliable in the long-run.” Prior local investments in storage, water use efficiency, groundwater management, and water recycling are all helping Orange County water providers deal with the historic dry conditions. Orange County is a worldwide leader in water recycling with renowned projects including the Groundwater Replenishment System, the world’s largest water purification system for potable reuse. Additional water recycling projects are currently underway throughout Orange County to ensure water supply reliability and reduce dependence on imported supplies. Orange County is also a long-time leader in water use efficiency, having piloted and implemented a wide variety of innovative projects and programs that save more than 21 million gallons of water per day. While Orange County is presently in a good position in terms of its water supplies, we continue to encourage residents and businesses to use water as efficiently as possible year-round. Residents have done a great job of being water efficient inside their homes, but there is still water savings potential outside the home, where nearly 50% of our water use occurs.
