HomeMy WebLinkAbout1981-09-24 - Resolution No. 81-170 • RESOLUTION NO. 81-17 YORBA LINDA COUNTY WATER DISTRICT OPPOSITION TO NATIONAL MONUMENT STATUS OF MONO LAKE BASIN WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of Yorba Linda County Water District support the need to establish reliable supplies of water and energy for the Southern California area, and WHEREAS, Southern California and Orange County will suffer serious cutbacks in water supplies as a result of the Arizona decision limiting supplies from the Colorado River and, WHEREAS, Southern California and Orange County water supplies from the State Water Project supplying waters from the north to Southern California are in jeopardy, and WHEREAS, cost of electric power to pump water to Southern California is on the increase and it is in the interest of Southern California and Orange County residents to keep the costs of power to pump water down, and WHEREAS, any threat to the City of Los Angeles Mono Lake Basin supply of water and power poses a potential threat to local water supplies of Yorba Linda County Water District, and WHEREAS, H. R. 4057 threatens the City of Los Angeles' water supply and any economical source of hydro-electrical power from the Mono Lake Basin for the following reasons: the City of Los Angeles' water rights and the Mono Lake Basin have been attacked by a group of people by means of various lawsuits and media presentations; that is the same group as sponsored H. R. 4057 taken to declare the Mono Lake Basin a national monument which poses a potential threat to approximately 20% of the City of Los Angeles' water supply, a substantial amount of economical hydro-electrical energy from the Mono Basin, and WHEREAS, Secretary of Interior Andrus, in previous actions, previously rejected the proposal of a Mono Lake National Monument as being unnecessary for sound management of federal lands and resources in the Basin, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Yorba Linda County Water District opposes H. R. 4057 and all similar bills which would undermine the security of Los Angeles water rights in the Mono Basin.
