DISCUSSION ITEMS
1. Metropolitan's Intearated Area Plan for the Central Pool Area and MWDOC's Proiection
of Demands
Kevin Hunt discussed the efforts of MWDOC to buy and wheel water from the South
Feather Water District near Oroville, California. Discussion included reasons for this
type of approach, such as current basin restrictions. In addition Mr. Hunt reviewed
proposed purchase and transport cost, seasonal availability and interested pool users.
The information was made available for our consideration if the District is interested
exploring this local area approach.
2. Chanaes in Timina of Met Rates Issues
Kevin Hunt updated us on the current status of proposed demand and peaking charges
MWD was considering for all member agencies. It appears MWD has elected to return
the proposed rate charges back to a study group for more investigation.
3. Status of MWDOC Ocean Desaltina Proiect
Kevin Hunt reviewed the proposed ocean desalting project that is to be located near
Dana Point in South Orange County. The proposed project would use slant drilling
under the ocean to obtain the water that will be used as influent to the project. The
slant drilling will allow a better quality project influent and reduce environmental impacts
to the ocean site. The brine waste can be disposed through a local agency's ocean
outfall for treated wastewater. Other elements of this project are still being explored,
such as securing a discounted energy rate and other considerations that make the
project more cost effective. Discussions with end users for the water product to be
generated is on going.
4. Grant Related Information
Kevin Hunt supplied information and materials dealing with water related grants. The
information covered a wide range of grants relating to water conservation, water quality,
water system planning and design to name a few. The funding sources for the grants
cover a number of groups such as State Water Resources Control Board, California
Health and Human Services, Cal EPA and Infrastructure and Economic Development
Bank.
The committee adjourned a 5:25 p.m.
